Spider Veins – What They Are and How to Treat Them

What are spider veins?

Spider veins (or telangiectasias) are small, dilated blood vessels that appear just beneath the surface of the skin. They often form on the legs, thighs, or face, and while they’re usually harmless, many people find them aesthetically bothersome.

These fine, reddish to bluish lines often branch out like a spider web, hence the name. They can be caused by a variety of factors, including genetics, hormonal changes, prolonged standing, sun damage, and circulatory issues.

Who gets spider veins?

Spider veins can affect both men and women, but they are more common in women, especially after pregnancy or with age. They may also appear in individuals with a family history, or those who spend long hours on their feet or sitting.

While not dangerous, spider veins may cause a feeling of heaviness or itching, especially on the legs.

What are the treatment options?

Thankfully, spider veins can be treated effectively with several minimally invasive methods. At our clinic, we offer the following:

  1. Sclerotherapy
A fine needle is used to inject a special solution into the vein, causing it to collapse and
fade over time. This is a highly effective treatment for leg veins and requires no downtime.
  2. Laser Therapy
A targeted laser beam heats and closes off the affected vessels. This is ideal for smaller
veins, especially on the face or around the nose.
  3. Intense Pulsed Light (IPL)
IPL uses light energy to target pigmentation and vascular lesions. It’s often used on the
face and is also effective for diffuse redness or rosacea.

Prevention tips

While not all spider veins can be prevented, certain measures may reduce your risk:

  • Avoid standing or sitting for long periods
  • Wear compression stockings when appropriate
  • Protect your skin from excessive sun exposure
  • Maintain a healthy weight and stay active
